Trouble in Ismaskar

Post  steven_h_d on Tue Dec 11, 2018 8:53 pm

It was 1490DR The Year of the Sky Walker, early in The Claw of the Sunsets.
Rose was a bard who traveled the country. Recently from Djerad Thymar, now in Imaskar, or more correctly High Imaskar. So she had plenty of stories to tell. Her dance was admirable and she played one of her instruments. At 5’2” and with Red Hair and Blue Eyes, a quick wink or smile and she could charm and dance the night away and make coin for her troubles. She wore mostly Blue and green dresses as the red one clashed with the hair, she needed it to stand out. At least that is how it started out. Now Rose traveled thru the streets of Ghldaneth, searching for a way out. John her current Sell sword companion followed, looking back over their path for the pursuit that would surely follow. Rose carried a box, that should rumors hold true contained one of the lost Imaskar Artifacts. She had been handed the box as a reward for singing at the tavern near closing time by a gnome of all things. It was her final act before she sailed West to the Dragon Coast. At least that had been the plan.

Busy night in Ghldaneth, has several in a row had been. Rose’s stories of Heroics in Djerad Thymar had been well received. Even if it had taken three years to travel here the news was still fresh. Those here interested in a place some distance but close enough to trouble them of war and conquest. A Gnome had approached, he awkwardly attempted to talk to her, and wanted to pull her back stage. John on que had stepped in and the gnome quivered. Looking over his shoulder the gnome handed her a box. It had writing all over it in a strange tongue, small gems in several places. Rose couldn’t tell what tree it was from but a pretty Box. The Gnome had claimed whispered it had been taken from the Temple of Horus-Re, whoever that was. In it was the key to Doom for Imaskar, and not to open it. It was he said magically protected and there were those hunting for the box and it’s treasure. Now it was to be passed to a follower of Milil, which somehow he assumed Rose, a bard was one of them. He reminded her not to open it, but keep it safe. Why the gnome picked a total stranger to send the box away became apparent shortly after midnight when three thieves from the Son’s of the Eighth cult broke into her room and attempted to take the box.

Up till then Rose had thought the box a joke or a bad attempt at flirting. Often instead of pay some cheapskates attempt to pass a treasure Map, priceless junk, or other stuff off. Why she often demanded half the pay up front when she arrived. John was paid to make sure she got the other half as well as keeping the first half. For private performances is was a cost up front. For impromptu ones at a tavern she set out a tip hat or Jar. If it wasn’t filling up she threatened to quit and leave. That happens from time to time, hence the bodyguard for those that can’t accept No for an answer.
So there sat the box in plain sight on the night stand. Rose had awoken from her trance, a warning in the shape of a white elk in her thoughts, to stop them.

• Drawing her long knife, she lunged at the one nearest her and the Box.
• A Human Male, who took the blade hard and gasped falling to the floor.
• The second attacker a human women swung a sword at Rose which she half dodged and half blocked.
• This was enough to wake Cindy who shared her room, Cindy let out a scream, then let loose magic missles to drive the woman back.
• The third attacker was still entering the window a Tiefling Male.
• Rose stood up and parried another strike from the human woman and the Tiefling was drawing his blade and moving to box Rose in.
• Cindy hit the first man with a vase
• The scream, crash and clash of blades had gone on long enough for John to arrive.
• John burst thru the door, and the light from the hall helped identify her attackers, the symbols on their tattoo heads the Sons of the Eight.
• John was not armored, and wielding a long sword, a better choice in the confines of the room then his normal great sword.
• John Swiftly beat back the tiefling male and bleedings the male dove back out the window. The Female Human took one more swing at Rose and followed.
• Rose then noticed the Male human she had first struck had also gone.
• The box was still with Rose
• Jake appeared at the door, weapon ready. He was looking back down the hall in case more attackers should appear from the main room.

They had hardly caught their breath. Assured neither of them were injured. What follow next was a banging on the front door of the tavern. “Open in the name of the LAW!” The Vengeance-Takers were here. They heard the Tavern Keeper reply he was coming, and what the matter was. “You have a Mulhorandi Idol in the tavern.” Rose and John were stunned for just a second before she started grabbing her things and stuffing them in the backpack along with the box. Cindy hasten to do the same. John disappeared into the Hall, and came back with his pack, armor and weapons all in his hands. A quick look out the window to make sure the attackers were gone and out Jake went to be sure the path was safe. Rose jumped down next with John handing stuff to her once her feet touched the ground. Cindy followed next Then John followed a tighter fit than either their attackers or Rose had been, but he made it.
Now standing in a grove of tree she doff the nightshirt and dressed back in leather armor, Then John switched into his chain armor. Cindy who wore no armor was assisting Jake get his Chain Armor on in the dark. They didn’t have time to be embarrassed. They then were wondering the streets in the dark, their plans to leave altered by the arrival at the INN of Vengeance-Takers, Imaskar chosen religion enforcers. The Judge-Executioners were as unreasonable as the Demonic Son’s of the Eighth thieves had been. Regarding anything from a Mulhorandi Deity as blasphemy. How they came to be aware so quick there was something from a tomb at the Inn was interesting but Rose had no time to discover. At least she now knew who Horus-Re was, or had been.

While the Vengeance-Takers argued with the Tavern Keeper, about who had the artifact, which the tavern owner had no idea. Then there was talk about a dead Gnome. Which viewing the parties involved could be caused by the Son’s Cult or the Vengeance-Takers. Best to not be the next ones questioned and get it pinned on them. Getting a ship to set sail at this hour would be too much commotion and the guards would be alerted. So they found a break in the wall that was unguarded, slipped out of town into the houses outside the walls and from there into the surrounding woods. Now where to go, neither the gnomes cryptic words to keep it safe, nor the Warning from the trance had said where to go. East was the Plains of Purple Dust, West was the Sea of Fallen Stars, North was Skyclave and south the Beastlands. The temptation to just bury the dang box and walk away was great. John was carrying his backpack as well as two more of her clothing. A bard needed to have options. She took one of them herself so they now each had two. John said he could carry all three, but she told him it was more important he had a sword hand ready if they should get caught. John said he was planning to use her bag as a shield. Plus she should do the same if they were attacked, better the clothes take the beating than the flesh. Jake also had a sword out, but Rose wasn’t as sure of his fighting as she was John. Cindy a spell caster had been hired when she couldn’t find a third fighter available. Both of them had their pack strapped on their backs. Jake had a long Sword and a Shield, and might some day grow into his armor. Cindy had a blue dress on and held a Focus Wand.

John just nodded. We had several days of rations, and I had paid him for three months service. Rose had left the Dragonborn city of Djerad Thymar ahead of a pending war, and the election of the Vanquisher. She had arrived as part of a caravan, the Dragonborn guard she had hired returning to Thymar. Trouble now seemed to be following her. Originally John was hired as a bodyguard, just for in the city any well know Lady Bard didn’t go around unescorted, it wasn’t proper or safe. Mostly he keep the drunks from attempting to grab her, or thieves from attempting to rob her, a safe enough occupation. John had so far proven to be a very good companion. He had not attempt to seduce or capture her himself. He was cheery and intelligent to converse with when she was not performing. This being labeled criminals and escaping in the dark was something else neither of them had bargained for. While Rose was not a Noble, she was well known enough that hiding in town was not an option and she would not be able to work. They began the journey in a roundabout path, off the main roads. Roads being the key, until the second spell Plague, most travel In High Ismaskar was by flight, now that the earth motes were unsafe, roads were bringing to form from wagon travel. Still they now had several days of travel, bypassing bays, swamps and of course steering clear of the Purple Dust. They turned to pass the Ruins of Skuld to the East. Although there were small villages around they thought best to bypass them for now. A remote farm house was a good place to hold up as morning light was beginning to show over the Dragonsword Mountains. They waited in the woods watching the farm folks embrace the morning with their chores. Multiple families or one large family it appeared. Which was not uncommon even in civilized areas. Numbers were important for protection.

This is page 6 of 224 of a story that is still undergoing revisions.

After waiting and watching for several hours, Rose decided to approach. She checked the skies for redwings and their scout riders. Then hailed the house as was proper. They may be farmers, but they also had weapons as quick as a wink and were on guard. Finally after studying the two of them and peering into the forest behind one mid aged male approached, sword in hand while others held bows in ready. John’s sword remained in his sheath. When he was close enough to talk without yelling the farmer stopped. Rose Smiled and spoke “Good day, Sir we are two travelers headed to Skyclave, and unaccustomed to the distances here. Our journey has been long, coming from Djerad Thymar and we ended up traveling most of the night. We ask if we can get a meal and a place to rest, in exchange for news of the lands we have passed thru. I am Rossalla of Delzimmer and this is my escort John of Gheldameth” This was of course a common enough practice, in most lands. She hated using the reference to the real town they had escaped from, but there would be questions asked to John and she wasn’t sure how well he could hold up to being named from a town he wasn’t familiar with. If he was asked to provide stories could he keep a distant land intertwined in the story? While Rose had tales enough from her Fake Town to pass as a Rift Lander. The subtle change to her name would be close enough for her to respond and for John to shift to calling her by the name. The mystery of a far land should bring most of the questions to her. Jake the farmer, was seeing a female elf of average height, red Hair, slender built and blue eyes. Dressed now in her traveling Leather Armor and armed with sword and crossbow only the cuffs and the fringe of her skirt showed below the armor. Her legs had armor sections strapped to them but still visible. In John he saw as a Tall Human will long black hair, black eyes. Chain Mail covered him with a leather overtunic, a great sword, plus other weapons, pack and tools. Common enough for travelers to go armed and protected in these woods. Plus, he had enough muscle to make anyone think twice about crossing him. Finally Jake, after looking her over a long second time, agreed. He did ask that John keep his blades sheathed. John for his part was being pleasant enough as if a sword and 4 archers pointed at him was an everyday occurrence. If that was true Rose needed to pay him more.
